Brahmatal Trek
Brahmatal is a high altitude
alpine lake located in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand, India, at an
elevation of around 12, 250ft (3735m). It’s a typical winter trek popular among
trekkers for its beautiful snow-covered landscapes and stunning views of peaks
like Trishul and Nanda Ghunti. It
is a moderately difficult level trek of 24 km approx. starting from Lohajung
village of Chamoli district of
Uttarakhand, and is named after Brahmatal Lake, believed to be where Lord
Brahma meditated, hence the name Brahmatal, meaning ‘Lake of Brahma.
Along the trail, one can
experience panoramic views of snow-covered Himalayan peaks like Mt. Trishul (7120m) and Mt. Nanda Ghunti (6309 m), and several
other high peaks. From the summit, you can even spot Roopkund Lake and its ridge
far away.
The route passes through dense oak and rhododendron forests,
fir forests often blanketed in snow and serene alpine lakes like Bekaltal. The trail leads to the mythical Brahmatal Lake, which is
completely frozen in winter. It is one of the few Himalayan treks where you walk
through dense snowfields for several days.
