Gomukh Tapovan
The Gomukh Tapovan Trek is challenging but rewarding in the Garhwal Himalayas of Uttarakhand, India. It is one of
India’s most iconic Himalayan treks, famous for its spiritual significance,
glacier landscapes and close-up views of Mt. Shivling. This trek combines
natural beauty with spiritual significance. The journey starts from Gangotri
and leads to Gomukh Glacier, which is the source of the Ganges River. It then
ascends to the high altitude meadows of Tapovan, offering panoramic views of
peaks like Mt. Shivling. The trek takes almost 8 days and requires physical
fitness due to varied and difficult terrain, including rocky paths, moraines,
glaciers and steep climbs. The weather is unpredictable with temperatures
ranging from 8-15 degrees Celsius during the day to below freezing point at
night. Sudden changes, including rain and snowfall, are also common. The trek is
not possible in winter as Gangotri National Park is closed and high altitude
areas freeze. The trek is considered a spiritual journey to the source of the
holy Ganges River.
