Mardi Himal Trek
Mardi Himal is a mountain in the Annapurna region of Nepal. It
is famous for the Mardi Himal trek which is a moderate short trek and a very
popular hiking route that offers stunning views of the Himalayas. It is a perfect trek for trekkers who want close-up views of Annapurna Range
without the heavy crowds of Annapurna Base Camp or Poon Hill routes. The trek
goes up to a maximum altitude of 4,500
meters (14,764 feet) at base camp, is known for its diverse scenery including
rhododendron forests and high altitude meadows and offers clear views of
mountains like Machhapuchhe, Annapurna South and Dhaulagiri.
The villages you pass through such as Dhampus, Deurali,
Forest Camp, Siding and Lwang are inhabited mostly by Gurung and Magar ethnic
groups along with smaller populations of Tamang and Chhetri people.
People living along the
Mardi Himal trail rely on subsistence
agriculture and eco-tourism which has grown since the trek opened in 2012. The
houses are made of stone and wood with slate roofs. There are tea houses which
provide warm Nepali meals for the trekkers.
One of the most special things about the Mardi Himal Trek is
the genuine kindness and hospitality of the local people. Trekkers are often
greeted with smiles, herbal tea and 'Namaste’.
Their deep respect for the mountains comes from the belief that the Himalayas
are sacred—the home of gods and protective spirits.
