Satopanth Tal Trek
Satopanth Tal is considered a sacred glacier lake in
Uttarakhand, India. It is located at an altitude of approximately 4,600 m (
15,100ft) and situated in the Garhwal Himalayas. It is known as a holy site and
believed to be the place where Brahma, Vishnu and Maheshwar meditated. The
Satopanth trek is one of Uttarakhand’s most spectacular high-altitude treks,
known for its dramatic Himalayan scenery. The trek starts from Mana, the last
village in India, near Badrinath temple in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand.
The trek is considered moderately challenging and is best suited for experienced
trekkers.
The trek path follows the Alaknanda River and passes
through the Vasundhara and Sahastradhara waterfalls. It includes scenic meadows
and forests like Laxmi Van and Charrateerth. The lake is almost triangular in
shape, with each corner associated with the trinity-Brahma, Vishnu and
Maheshwar. The water is somewhat emerald green and is surrounded by snow-covered peaks. The lake remains snow-covered from late September to late June.
The best times to trek are May to June and September to October. Blue sheep
(Bharal), Himalayan marmots and sometimes snow leopards are seen in the region.
Local belief holds that rare birds, called Gandharvas, guard the lake and keep
it clean by consuming pollutants. It is a less commercialised trekking site than the Valley of Flowers and Har ki Dun.
The trekking region falls within the Nanda Devi Biosphere buffer zone. Fitness
is a major concern and requirement for this trek as it includes an 8-10 km trek per day, carrying a backpack at high altitudes and walking on uneven moraine and
boulders.
